Behind the Mic: Recording “A Gift for Grief” at Heathcote Studio
I have hosted a wide range of projects in the studio—musicians, audiobooks, corporate podcasts, meditations—but one of the most profound has been a deeply personal one: recording my wife Louise Bates and her podcast, A Gift for Grief.
A Podcast Born from Personal Loss
Louise created A Gift for Grief out of her own experience of devastating loss. After the death of our son Matthew, Louise turned to writing as a way to process her grief. Her first book, Letters to Matthew, is a raw and honest collection of journal entries and letters written to our son during the first year after his death.
She later published A Gift for Grief, a second book that explores how grief, while painful, can also offer unexpected insights and transformation. Both books were stepping stones that ultimately led Louise to launch the podcast—an audio space where others could share their own journeys through loss.
Recording Conversations That Matter
I’ve had the privilege of recording each episode with her. A Gift for Grief features intimate conversations with guests who have experienced profound loss and found ways to move forward. Some are heartbreaking, some are hopeful—but all are honest, courageous, and deeply human.
As her husband and the person behind the mixing desk, I see both sides of this project: the emotional depth Louise and her guests bring to each interview, and the technical care we put into capturing these important conversations in the best possible sound.
Why This Matters
Recording this podcast has reminded me of the real power of audio storytelling. Yes, our studio is designed for professional sound—but it’s also a place where people can speak their truth and feel heard. In A Gift for Grief, Louise creates space for stories that are rarely told but urgently needed.
I’m incredibly proud of what she’s created—not only as her husband but as someone who believes in the healing power of honest conversation.
